Beautifully painted icon of Christ Pantocrator circa 1831, Russia.
Stylistically we can see the effect that Catherine the Great’s westernization of Russia had in the creation of icons even several decades following her reign.
The shift back to more ancient Russian iconographic style, originating from Byzantium, would come later with the reign of Alexander III in 1881.
This depiction reminds me very much of Dürer’s Christ Pantocrator.
